A $2,000 venue-only budget for 90 wedding guests works out to $22.22 a head. In Southern California, that is tight but not impossible. It gets tighter when a garden venue tells you its cap is 82 and the couple counts toward it.

That is a real case from our planner desk. A couple in Southern California came to VenueKonnex with a clear brief. Here is what happened, with the numbers.

The brief

  • Event: wedding, ceremony and reception in one place
  • Guests: about 90
  • Date: Friday, July 28, 2028
  • Budget: $2,000, venue rental only (not food, not décor)
  • Style: relaxed, garden feel, outdoor ceremony with an indoor backup
  • Must-haves: parking, on-site restrooms, outside caterers allowed, tables and chairs available

Two details made this a smart brief. The couple picked a Friday on purpose to cut the price. And they said up front that older relatives were coming, so indoor backup and restrooms were not optional.

The math, three ways

$2,000 divided by 90 guests is $22.22 per guest. Now run it the way a venue will.

  • Per guest, as asked (90): $22.22
  • Per guest at 80 invited: $25.00
  • Per hour on a 6-hour rental: about $333 an hour

The six-hour line is an example, not a quote. Ask every venue how many hours the rental includes. Setup and cleanup time often count against you.

What the garden venue said

The couple’s inspiration was The Secret House of Ivy, an outdoor garden venue in Downey, in LA County. We asked three things: is July 28, 2028 open, does the Friday discount still apply, and what are the package options.

The answers came back in one reply:

  • 2028 is open for bookings, and Friday, July 28, 2028 specifically is available.
  • A $500-off Friday promotion exists. Its terms tie it to the venue’s higher “Gold” package, not the Basic one. Confirm which package you need before you count the saving.
  • Two packages (Basic and Gold) were sent, built around an 82-guest event.
  • The cap is 82 and includes the bride and groom. That is about 80 invited guests, not 90.

That last point is the one that catches people. A headcount of 82 sounds close to 90. It is not. Ten guests are out, and the couple has to cut the list or find a bigger space.

Three lessons you can use today

1. Ask whether the cap includes you. “Capacity 82” can mean 82 guests or 82 people total. Ask in your first message. It costs nothing and saves a tour.

2. Ask whether the discount follows the package. A “$500 off Friday” line is not a $500 saving until you know which tier it applies to. Get it in writing.

3. Check the far-out date early. Many planners assume a 2028 date is too early to book. This venue was already taking 2028 dates. Asking cost one email.

Other Southern California venues to price against

If a $2,000 ceiling is firm, these live listings give you real reference points. Each one needs a quote request to confirm your date and package.

  • The Silverlake Pavilion in Los Angeles: listed range $1,200 to $2,500, $1,850 average, up to 120 guests, with an outdoor patio, garden, parking and restrooms. A $2,000 budget sits inside its range.
  • Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden in Long Beach: listed at a $900 average for typical events, with a garden setting and photography spots. Confirm the guest limit before you fall for it.
  • The Los Angeles River Center and Gardens: a $7,000 average, up to 300 guests. Useful as a reality check. It shows what a larger garden site costs and why a 90-guest Friday is the smarter play.

Listed averages are a starting point. Your final price depends on date, hours and package.

What I would do with $2,000 and 90 guests

  1. Pick Friday or Sunday. Skip Saturday.
  2. Shortlist venues whose published range includes $2,000.
  3. Ask each one: does the cap include the couple, how many hours, what is included, and which package unlocks the discount.
  4. If the cap is under 90, decide now: trim the list or raise the budget.

As of our last update on this case, the couple had been offered venue tour windows and had not yet picked a venue. We do not know the final outcome, and we will not guess.

Often. This venue advertised $500 off a Friday date, tied to its Gold package. Always confirm what the discount applies to.

Not always stated. In this case it did: 82 total meant about 80 guests. Ask before you book.
