The Alaska Zoo might not be the largest, but it is incredibly engaging. Each exhibit features detailed information boards and fascinating tactile displays, like comparing the skulls and paw prints of Black, Brown, and Polar bears—the differences are truly eye-opening!
While I expected only local wildlife, the zoo has a diverse history. I was surprised to learn about Annabelle the Asian Elephant; though she passed away in 1997, her memorial tells a touching story of an exotic animal in this sub-arctic climate. As someone from Asia, it was also a surreal experience to see a Tibetan Yak for the first time right here in Alaska!
A highlight for me was seeing the rescued animals, like the Bald Eagles that can no longer fly in the wild. Though I missed the Tigers and Polar Bears by arriving in the afternoon, I did manage to spot a Brown Bear and a Moose (even if they were enjoying some distance).
Pro tip: Go in the morning! Many animals are more active then. If you’re in Anchorage, this zoo is definitely worth a visit for its heart and educational depth.

Nice little zoo with a variety of animals. The snow made it feel really special. Didn’t get to see the polar bear but something to look forward to on my next visit.

Very nice Zoo, cages big enough so the animals can roam around, they also have a tiger 🐅 which was very interesting to see in Alaska… I saw a bald eagle in a cage, but I also saw another bald eagle on a pine tree in total freedom perched on a tall pine tree, they have wolves and wolverines, and many other animals, it was a nice walk in this Zoo, they also have a polar bear, but I didn't see it since he stayed inside his cave… maybe next time…
The staff is very friendly, and there is a Cafe inside this Zoo, so you can have your coffee or hot chocolate, like I did… since it was so cold with snow on the ground when I went there, but started to snow again… still had a nice and enjoyable walk there… I highly recommend you visit this place!
