Glory be to Janus that I discovered this museum and have it fulfil my urge to learn more about the ancient history of Britain. I came here as a 22nd birthday present as in the lead up to this I was looking into Roman rule within Britain and I said what better place to start than where in 43AD the Romans led by Claudius proclaimed Camulodunum the capital of the province of Britannia.
The artefacts within the museum were unlike any other I had seen and I have been to many museums in my time. From skulls of deceased Romans to the muskets used to siege the castle during the Civil War. As someone who sometimes used BSL to communicate with my peers I appreciated the presence British Sign Language within the museum as in my opinion history should be accessible to all!
Staff were friendly and welcoming.
I would recommend anyone come and visit this monument to the history of Colchester and in a small way, Britain

Well worth a visit. I had an Art Pass to get in for free, but if I didn't then £13.50 ( for a non local unlikely to return to Colchester anytime soon) to get in feels a bit steep, as that only covers the ground and 1st floor exhibits.
The extra £4.75 for the tour was well worth it. Sadly the roof is closed at the moment, but still very interesting to see the foundations and great stairs, and hear about the fascinating history of the building.

Colcester Castle Museum is on the smaller side, but there are a few floors to explore and a good amount of interactions that are great for young children interested in history. There is also a fantastic park outside and a huge sand pit, which has plenty to do. It's a good little afternoon trip. I wrote about our experience on our local blog, Life with Jupiter and Dann.
