My Sweetheart isn't fond of cold. She endures every winter with good humor, cold hands and warm slippers. I decided to surprise her one Saturday and we went for a car ride to Ames. I managed to keep the butterfly wing to myself, until we arrived. 2 lovely retired school teachers greeted us and collected our $12.00 each for admission, (no senior discount). Then we entered the butterfly enclosure. A waterfall cheerily splashes and tropical flowers bloom for a myriad of butterflies to feed from. "Look, honey, it's summertime here all year." She was delighted, warm and comfy! Her face filled with a look of child-like wonder.
The trick is, to pick out a bench or a ledge and sit, just quietly, as the butterflies become acclimated to your presence. Then observe. (Quiet anything is NOT truly my forte') Even I was awed and amused!
We visited the garden railroads and trolley line, made a wish in the fountain and then hiked out to see Elwood, the giant Gnome. We made the required stop at the gift shop.
We had a grand "Summertime" day out in December!

This is wonderful place to spend time with family and friends or to relax your soul… Their garden conservatory and butterfly wing is something you must see… Time stops when you get there…
