This is a world-famous botanical conservatory located inside Garfield Park on the West Side of Chicago, Illinois, USA. Often described as “landscape art under glass,” it’s one of the largest indoor botanical conservatories in the United States and a major cultural landmark.
What it is: A historic horticultural destination featuring thousands of plant species from around the world, displayed across multiple indoor gardens.
Indoor & outdoor experiences: Visitors can explore themed plant houses (like the Desert House with cacti and tropical palms) and enjoy outdoor gardens such as water lily ponds and demonstration gardens.
Hours & entry: The Conservatory usually operates Wednesday through Sunday with varied seasonal hours; reservations may be recommended or required for entry.

I loved the Garfield Park Conservatory. The conservatory itself is stunning, filled with an incredible variety of plants and beautifully designed rooms that make you feel like you’ve stepped into a completely different world. It’s perfect for wandering around, taking in the greenery and just slowing down for a bit. The entry fee is 10 dollars, and we ended up spending more than two hours exploring without even realizing how much time had passed.
It’s also a very photogenic place. A lot of people go specifically to take pictures, and honestly, it makes total sense because every corner looks like a perfect backdrop. Even with people around, it still manages to feel calm and enjoyable.

Gorgeous and lush. Great break from the chicago winter. The coat rack (unattended, self service) is very helpful because its warm in there. Small, about 30-45min to walk through the entire space. Semi kid friendly, with one room specifically kid focused. An unfenced koi pond in the center of the fern room would be a concern for young toddlers. Great spot to get very close to the fish tho! Super fun to play where’s waldo with the hidden mini dinosaurs and dragons figures in the fern room as well.
The conservatory participates in the museum for all program- with an EBT card, you get free admission.
