A historic church ruin, St. James heroically took two German artillery shells, protecting the historic White Horse, that we may enjoy a pint today. It is interesting to step inside and admire the 800 year old craftsmanship, still apparent today.

I was heading towards the castle in a more or less straight direction and I happened upon this old set of ruins, reportedly from the 12th century. Their appeared, to me at least, to be a mix of ruins within this same building as if it was an older structure at some point that got built over. It was right next to Hubert Passage which led to the Castle so this was an auspicious happenstance.

Ruins of a 12th century church situated alongside a busy road in Dover. The church was largely constructed from Caen stone and saw use as a Cinque Ports court until the mid 19th century. Unfortunately it suffered extensive damage in WW2 bombing raids. The ruins have been retained as a memorial to the wartime experiences of Dover's people. They are free to visit and open all year round, with an information board detailing the building's history.
