You haven’t truly "seen" GenSan until you’ve set foot in the General Santos City Fish Port Complex (GSCFPC). It’s a bit of a confession, but despite growing up here, I never actually visited this place as a child. Stepping inside for the first time was an eye-opener—and a lesson in why this is the city's true lifeblood.
​If you’re planning a visit, take it from my experience: timing is everything. You need to be here early—ideally before 6 AM—when the massive tuna are being hauled in. We arrived at 10 AM, and by then, the action had already wrapped up for the day. Also, don’t forget the gear! Boots are mandatory. There are rentals right outside the gate, but a word of advice: check them for holes! My right foot ended up completely drenched after stepping into the disinfecting footbath because of a leaky boot.
​Despite the wet socks, the significance of this place is undeniable. Since opening in 1997, this complex is what transformed GenSan from a modest fishing town into a global powerhouse, rightfully earning us the title of "Tuna Capital of the Philippines."
​It’s gritty, it’s industrial, and it’s absolutely essential. This isn't just a port; it’s a monument to the industry that put our hometown on the world map. A must-visit for every traveler!

If you want to see tuna that's almost as big as people, then go to Market 1. They have blue marlin and yellow fin tuna. Go early, maybe at the latest 7:30 to 8:00 AM as the catch of the day would be sold and packed if you go any later than this time. Bring an ID and follow their dress code. There are boots that can be rented near the entrance.

An interesting site in GenSan, though not a tourist spot per se. It offers a unique experience, especially since the city is known as the Tuna Capital.

Sleeveless tops and shorts are not allowed, and visitors are required to wear boots. There’s a booth where you can rent attire that complies with the dress code.
