We started our day with an amazing tour of the veterinary hospital. It was well worth the $25/person for a behind-the-scenes look. The docents were very informative, the facilities were impressive, we got to see some animals, and we even got time from a veterinarian to answer questions. I highly recommend this tour.
Next was the zoo proper. I never felt crowded or rushed despite it being a holiday weekend. I really appreciate there not being a crowd – other zoos and aquariums make us want to leave. It was really fun taking the gondola to the newer section of the zoo.

Visited Oakland Zoo and had a wonderful experience! The gondola ride is absolutely fantastic – it’s one of the highlights of the visit and offers beautiful views as you ride up to the California Trail area. The ride itself is smooth and the panoramic experience is worth the trip alone.
The tropical section was excellent and really impressed me. The exhibits are well-designed and provide great educational value. Speaking of which, this zoo isn’t just for kids – adults will find plenty to learn throughout the exhibits. The conservation-focused approach and informative displays make it engaging for visitors of all ages.
One note: the Australia exhibit was closed during my visit, which was a bit disappointing as I was looking forward to seeing the wallabies and emus. Hopefully it reopens soon for others to enjoy.
Overall, Oakland Zoo exceeded my expectations. The combination of the gondola experience, well-maintained exhibits, and educational focus makes it a great destination. The facility shows clear investment in both animal welfare and visitor experience. Highly recommend for anyone in the Bay Area looking for a quality zoo experience!

My family and I visited the Oakland Zoo this past Sunday. The weather forecast predicted a light drizzle starting at 12 pm. Despite the slight drizzle, we arrived at the zoo at 11 am and found it surprisingly empty. The zoo was teeming with animals in various habitats, showcasing their natural behaviors. The staff was incredibly helpful and friendly, making our visit enjoyable. While the food prices were higher than outside the zoo, I understand that they have to cover their expenses. I appreciate their efforts in caring for the animals. I highly recommend the Oakland Zoo as a must-visit destination in the area. Although I’ve been to the San Diego Zoo, I found Oakland’s zoo to be quite comparable, particularly in terms of the cleanliness of its grounds.
