You cannot pass by this architectural marvel without taking a peek inside. Visitors are only allowed to tour the first floor but any enthusiast can spend least 20 minutes exploring the design intricacies. This Gothic Victorian was brought to life by Detroit-based architect Elijah E. Myers and without exaggeration it is in a league of its own. The building currently houses City Hall & other big hitters so be respectful and also be aware that there is a security checkpoint at entry. I was so excited to explore that I almost bypassed getting a Visitor Badge. The security and staff had a great sense of humor about it and were very friendly. No cost. A quick walk from the State Capitol and the Library of Virginia. In my opinion, Old City Hall is a must see!

I visited Virginia’s Old City Hall on a Sunday morning, so the building was closed, but even from the outside it is an absolute gem. Its High Victorian Gothic style, with ornate granite details and a striking clock tower, makes it one of Richmond’s most unique pieces of architecture. Just admiring the intricate stonework and dramatic design is worth the stop.

It’s conveniently located right next to Capitol Square, so you can easily combine it with a visit to the Virginia State Capitol and the other historic monuments in the area. Even if you can’t get inside, the exterior alone is a reminder of Richmond’s rich history and architectural heritage. I’ll definitely return on a weekday to see the famous interior atrium.

The architecture of the building is that of a stone castle and aesthetically the looks are very appealing. Went on Christmas Day and we were the only ones in the area … overall experience was very good.
