A truly excellent experience. Outstanding architecture, views and nature. The views can be enjoyed for free, right up to the monument itself which isn't fenced off.

The fee to enter the monument is reasonable. The experience can be likened to that of a small museum, combined with a traditional castle visit. There are three floors with modern, clean and interactive exhibits; a visitor can design their own heraldry, display it on a life size shield and together with a sword, pose for a photo.

What may be off putting for some is the narrow stairways which are used for getting both upwards and downwards meaning passing strangers very close and with very little foot room is mandatory. Some may find this element to be quite the adventure.

The view and architecture at the top has to be experienced.

The Wallace Monument woodland walk is a fantastic experience and a perfect way to enjoy both nature and history in one visit. The trail winds through beautiful, peaceful woodland, with tall trees creating a calm and refreshing atmosphere from the very start. The path is well maintained and easy to follow, making it suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

As you walk, there are lovely viewpoints and glimpses of the surrounding landscape, building anticipation before reaching the magnificent Wallace Monument itself. The combination of birdsong, rustling leaves, and fresh air makes the journey just as enjoyable as the destination.

It’s an ideal walk for anyone looking to escape the busy pace of daily life while still exploring one of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks. Relaxing, scenic, and full of character — a woodland walk well worth doing.

Steep hill to walk up but excellent path, and there is a mini-bus option available if you need it. Then lots of steps in the amazing tower, but brilliant exhibitions at 3 levels to catch your breath and learn about Wallace and the horrible oppressors of the time from England. A brilliant and arty animation lays out the scene for you, Wallace's sword is on display, a chance to learn about heraldry by creating your own projected shield, as well as busts of great Scottish artists, scholars, inventors and other leaders are amongst the installations. They were well geared to have something for a broad range of ages.
Then you climb the last steps to the top. It was a grey day with freezing winds when I went, but the views were still spectacular, and very thought provoking to be able to look down over the scene of such a bbattle.
The gift shop is worth a visit too as it has different items to the one at the lower cafe, many of which I had not seen before in my travels in Scotland.
I felt the pride, strength and inspiration throughout the experience at this important monument of the nation.
