The first thing I noticed; before the food, before the menu, before I’d even finished pretending I understood the wine list was the windows. I have never seen such clean windows. Birds were flying into them in what I can only assume was sheer disbelief. At one point I thought the restaurant simply didn’t have windows and that the outside world had been painted on by an extremely dedicated artist.

My wife ordered the fish, which arrived looking so elegant it seemed a shame to eat it. It was arranged with artistic flair, as though the chef had personally negotiated with each drop of sauce about its exact position on the plate. She declared it delicious, speaking in the reverent tone usually reserved for Cathedrals.

I had the steak. It was magnificent, perfectly cooked, tender cutting it made me ascend into a higher tax bracket, and accompanied by a sauce so good I briefly considered asking for a small bucket of it to take home. I restrained myself, mainly because I suspected they would provide it in a thimble and charge accordingly.

The service was impeccable. My water glass was never empty, which was impressive because I was drinking nervously, still unsure which of the seventeen pieces of cutlery I was supposed to use for what. I’m fairly certain I ate at least one course with what turned out to be a decorative instrument, but nobody said anything, which I believe is the true mark of fine dining.

All in all, it was a wonderful experience: superb food, flawless service, and windows so clean they may actually be theoretical rather than physical. The chef waved me goodbye, made me feel kid who received a PlayStation for Christmas. I would absolutely go again, just as soon as I recover financially and emotionally from paying for sparkling water that was, admittedly, excellent.

We had the most amazing time at the Cross. The staff were so welcoming upon arriving and accommodating with dietary requirements despite opting for the tasting plus the wine pairing. Each wine that was selected went beautifully with the dish and there wasnt anything we didnt like. The maître d, Liviu was outstanding in his wine selection and hospitality. Super friendly yet professional and fantastic knowledge of the wines. It was a really memorable meal thank you to Adam Bennett and his wonderful team.

After visiting The Cross last week for a dinner, I left happily saying “I think it’s one of the best steaks I’ve ever had”, and I’ve had a lot of steaks!
The duck egg to start was also delicious.
However, as a pair of foodies, my friend and I left feeling slightly disappointed with a few aspects.

Firstly, and this may sound pretentious, I first noticed that the menus we were given were damaged. Small and silly I know, but after eating at 10 Michelin star restaurants, it’s not something I expect to see, and something I will notice.
Secondly, although I did love being able to see the kitchen, the ambience of that room was something I’d expect at a local pub, or restaurant, not a Michelin star.
I also cannot say that I was overly impressed with the tasting menu, and differentiation from the la carte menu. I’ve never quite fancied chicken as part of a tasting menu for £125. Although I’m sure it was delicious, as I cannot fault the actual food we had.

Lastly, and I really hope that the restaurant see this and action it – we sat on a table next to the bathroom entrance. And the smell was just awful.
I could smell it driving home on me.
I highly recommend you close that part down and rectify the plumbing issue, so that future guests can sit and enjoy the lovely food, not smell… well, poo.

Pricing for what was in a bastardised version – two eggs and two steaks was the same as we have paid for 10 course menus elsewhere at Michelin stars, so I would personally not revisit until the above plumbing was fixed, and either the menu or the prices were altered.

It was a lovely evening, just let down my some small, but one massive issue
