I used to attend eucharistic celebrations at Saint William’s Cathedral when I was a student decades ago.
Visited this cathedral once again today, however it was closed maybe because there was no mass scheduled.
I was amazed how much change has happened. The cathedral used to have the original bricks. This new look of gold linings added aesthetics to its exterior.

A blast from the past. Even if you are not a spiritual person, you must recognize its value not only for its architecture but also to the story of the Filpino people.

A Stronghold of Faith in Ilocos Norte

The St. William Cathedral of Laoag stands as a historic testament to the unwavering faith of Roman Catholic Ilocanos. Visiting as part of my personal pilgrimage across Ilocandia’s historical churches, I was struck by the cathedral’s unique charm and solemn atmosphere.

One of the most captivating aspects is the distinct styling of its religious icons, which seem to carry influences reminiscent of Greek aesthetics. At the heart of the main retablo is St. William, flanked by the low mass altars of La Virgen Milagrosa de Badoc on the left and the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus on the right.

The church also preserves a traditional Way of the Cross, beautifully represented in old sculptural reliefs, adding to the sacred and historical ambiance. A truly remarkable place of worship that reflects the deep devotion and heritage of the Ilocano people.
