This museum is definitely worthwhile to visit. I spent a wonderful amount of time there, and I really appreciated how they introduced the history, especially the Japanese heritage and the coal mining past. They put a lot of effort into creating immersive displays, making it easy to understand what life in a coal mining cave would have been like. I loved that experience.

Located in the heart of downtown, this place is 1 min away from the Courtyard by Marriott. The museum is smaller compared to other museums you must have visited, but it definitely packs a punch. It is very well maintained. Staff is friendly too. Entry is by donation only, you are free to pay any amount. Gift shop is also interesting, lots of stuff to choose from. The products I noticed are sold at a dollar or 2 more compared to regular shops. The museum has a lot of historic displays and portrays indigenous culture. There is also a coal mine exhibit, which is pretty much like a real mine. It's great for kids, too. Overall, this museum hosts informative and interactive exhibits that tell the story of Nanaimo's history. Recommended!

An amazing place to learn about Nanaimo, and Vancouver Island. Friendly staff, and there's a gift shop and seating at the lobby area.
